What I learned While Making an “About Me” Post

I’m new to this blogging thing. Quite new. As in “watching youtube tutorials to figure out how to actually create my own site” type new. That being said, let me share some of my adventures!

1. The “About Me” post. According to many website coaches, the “About Me” area is The MOST visited part of anyone’s site. (I would cite which web coaches wrote that particular pearl of wisdom but every single one I read said it.) So, no pressure or anything, kids. Whatever I put in this area will be the single most visited piece of real estate on my site.

2. It’s vital to include some type of self photo. (This piece of advice is from the same universal set of web coaches.) Many coaches included beautiful examples of really talented self-drawn caricatures as well as beautiful and clever photo collections. Not being terribly talented or trained in drawing, I turned to my collection of family photos.  First stressful thing to realize: I am actually the photo-journalist of my family’s life. Hence, there are many photos, but very few photos with me in them. Then, there is the lowering realization that the few photos that do include me are, ahem, perhaps not as flattering as one might prefer. (I must confess that there were a few photos that inspired me to immediately go throw out several (ancient) shirts. And did I really wear my hair that way to go out to dinner? What was I thinking?!)

3. HOW to actually post an “About Me” thingy. This is where I am currently struggling, er, learning.  I read/listen to Fiona Ferris at howtobechic.com quite a bit. She has a recorded list of affirmations that I particularly like. One entry is particularly apropos. She says (in her lovely New Zealand accent), “I stay youthful by learning new technology.” Good thought and really good motivation. I encouraged myself today by thinking that I’ve grown younger by several decades at this point in my (new) blogging adventure.

I will conclude this post by confessing that the fabled “About Moi” (I’ve just decided to class-up my current nemesis project by adding a French flair to its name) is NOT visible on the site right now. I’m still trying to figure out how to attach the post (complete with temporary photo – slightly better hair look than normal – and 1 sentence) to the main menu.

Wish me luck!
