A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 28 – Thoughts from the Old Year?

December 30, 2020 It’s the day before New Year’s Eve. It was a lovely, sunny and cold day here in Paris. I just entered the apartment – I came rushing in right at curfew time. (My daughter and I had visited friends in the 7th arrondissement.) I can tell you that we marched double-time up the hill from the metro station to reach our building by 8 pm (France’s national curfew.) What a year we have all had! I haven’t devoted very much time yet to thinking about what types of changes or resolutions I might want to make for the new year. Today, I’ve paused to think about what…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 27 – Rest and Relax

December 29, 2020 In Fiona Ferris’s book, A Chic & Simple Christmas, she encourages us to take a rest break during the holidays. Whether it’s a short nap or an afternoon tea break or even a full morning puttering quietly around the house, the rest break refreshes our outlook and rebuilds our strength. Today was a lovely rest break for me here in chilly, windy Paris. (For my readers who live in truly cold climates like Canada or northern UK, thank you for your patience as I call slightly above freezing temperatures cold! I saw that Quebec had a low of 12 F (-11 C) this morning!) I wandered the…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 26 – More Holiday Investment Cooking

December 28, 2020 In A Chic & Simple Christmas, author Fiona Ferris describes how she makes sure that there is a stockpile of healthy meals stashed in the freezer for the busy month of December. By doing a bit of “investment” cooking before the rush and bustle of the holiday season begins, she can be sure that there will be a tasty and healthy meal ready to be popped into the microwave even on the busiest day. (No need to do a high-calorie and lower quality “take-out’ or delivery order.) I followed Fiona’s example and made several delicious soups that freeze and reheat easily.  (I like the idea of “investment”…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 24 – Treats for After the Big Day?

December 26, 2020 Fiona Ferris encourages us to have something to look forward to in her book, A Chic and Simple Christmas. The idea is that we have all of the holiday excitement and build-up to experience but we might also enjoy some type of treat after the actual Christmas Day festivities. Ordinarily, I would have some kind of trip planned. Here in France with the nation still watching rising CoVid-19 case numbers, a quick trip is not really on my possibilities list. Instead of having a bigger treat to look forward to, I am building a list of smaller treats to enjoy for the period between Christmas day and…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 23 – Joyeux Noël!

December 25, 2020 Joyeux Noël and Merry Christmas!  My intention for today is to revel in the feeling of thankfulness. It was a lovely morning as I  made my coffee and enjoyed both the quiet of puttering about in the kitchen by myself and memories of Christmases when the children were younger and they woke my husband and me up much earlier. Coffee back then happened after the noise and excitement of present opening. Today, the lure of presents drew them out of bed earlier than their usual mid-morning preferred vacation rising time. After present opening & breakfast (& more coffee), I wandered down rue Passy to get the day’s…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 21 – Counting Down to Christmas Day

December 23, 2020 The UK announced that they have cases of a new strain of CoVid-19. My heart goes out to the beleaguered nation and to their government and health officials trying to navigate this difficult situation. My host nation, France, has just closed its borders (les frontiers) to all UK vehicles and visitors. Sitting here in Paris, this news is stressful for two reasons. The first, of course, is that all of us around the world are concerned about the impact of this new strain.  The second, more personal, reason for my stress: the Marks & Spencer (a UK-based grocery store) down the street is now cut off from…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 20 – Christmas Day Food Pushers Rehearsal

December 22, 2020 In A Chic and Simple Christmas, author Fiona Ferris has a short section focused on how to handle, with grace, a situation in which someone is pressing more food or drink on us and we would prefer to decline. In fact, we may have declined several times and the person still offers. In her book, Better Than Before, author Gretchen Rubin describes food pushers as people who press others to reverse out of a healthy habit. We might hear someone say “You should enjoy yourself!” or “I baked this just for you!” What are some good stock phrases that enable us to slide quickly and easily through…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 18 – Christmas Day Food Rehearsal

December 20, 2020 Yesterday, I wrote about “Conversational Decorum” – how to enjoy social conversation showing thoughtfulness to others and consideration for ourselves. We can do this by using a mental practice session and prepared stock phrases to handle probable trouble areas/people. Today’s topic is along the same lines – using a mental practice session – but focused on how we want to feel around the holiday buffet. Fiona Ferris writes about her experiences with different approaches to food in her book, A Chic and Simple Christmas. My own holiday food experiences are very similar to hers. I love sweets and appetizers and have, in the past, thrown myself giddily…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 17 – Christmas Day Conversation Rehearsal

December 19, 2020 In A Chic and Simple Christmas, Fiona Ferris discusses how she mentally prepares for her Christmas day events. She writes that when she mentally “practices” for the day, she is able to relax and enjoy it even more.  One way to “practice” is to lay out one’s outfit several days before (and make sure everything is in good condition.) Another way is to visualize how you want to behave in different social events.  No matter how wonderful it is to gather with loved ones, there is always one or two participants who will say or do something that tests our “calm and chic” resolve. Having a pre-thought…

A Chic Paris Holiday Season – Day 16 – Overcoming An Orange Christmas Haze

December 18, 2020 I wandered through the large Hermes store on the rue Faubourg-St-Honore this morning. It was awash in colorful scarves, leather goods and light orange everything else.  It was also crowded with people. There were two  lines outside the shop of people waiting to enter – one line for people with appointments and one line for those of us without appointments. I was early to meet a friend nearby, so I thought to wander through the store and enjoy the Christmas decorations for a few minutes.  Within minutes my eyes were eagerly scanning the admittedly lovely displays. My fingers itched to pick up this trinket or that darling…
